Provost at Columbia Southern University educates others on his own Anterior Hip Replacement
September 14, 2006

Dr. Joe Manjone, Provost of Columbia Southern University at Orange
Beach, Alabama knew in 1997 that he needed hip surgery. As the pain grew worse, he saw two orthopedic physicians, but the outlook was “dismal”, he said. Then, a former student who was a Physical Therapist in Maryland told him about a new minimally invasive procedure that has been highly successful and involved a shorter recovery time and a lot less pain than traditional surgery.

As fate would have it, Dr. Manjone was driving down the expressway and saw a billboard announcing innovative Anterior Hip Replacement surgery by Dr. Lester Littell at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center. He called immediately for an appointment.

Dr Manjone had his surgery on Monday before Thanksgiving, was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, had Thanksgiving with his family on Thursday and was back at work on the following Monday. Four weeks later he was playing racquetball. Two months later he was back as a soccer referee on weekends.

Since his surgery, Dr. Manjone has “educated” many people – including a fellow soccer referee who needs two hip replacements – about the new surgery and the special surgery table for the procedure at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center in Alabama.
